Evidence

We have an obligation to be clear about why we assert the things we do about the physical and non-physical Universes, and about God. I want to state the reasons for my beliefs clearly here.

The Nature of Non-Physical World Evidence

In the physical world, evidence for the non-physical world appears as anomalies-- strange, unexplained occurrences. They lack consistency and cannot easily be replicated.

The reason is that evidence about the non-physical world differs from evidence about the physical world. They are two different realms with two entirely different bases. The physical realm is the world of beginnings and endings, entropy, decay, death, time, space, and separation. It is dominated by cause and effect. Do something and something else happens. Jump in the air and gravity will always pull you back to the surface of the earth.

The non-physical world has an entirely different basis. There are no beginnings and endings, no entropy, no decay, no time, no space, no death, and no separation. It is not dominated by cause and effect. Instead, it is conscious and personal. That is a profound difference.

In the physical universe, if you throw a ball, the ball will go a distance in a set trajectory and fall back to the earth. In the non-physical world, sending something is more like asking your daughter to go to the grocery store for bread, milk, and eggs. Your daughter may return with doughnuts, soda pop, and a watermelon. You might be unhappy, but you may be very pleased when she explains that she noticed a spare loaf of bread in the cupboard before leaving, she left the milk in the car and was just about to get it, and the store was out of eggs. However, her brother wanted doughnuts and gave her the money for them, the soda pop was on sale and it is your favorite, and the watermelon was just something she wanted--she loves watermelon!

In a cause/effect universe, she violated the laws of nature. She didn't bring what you wanted, unlike the ball that must fall back to earth when it is sent. In a conscious, personal universe, she didn't bring what you expected, but everything that came out of it was even better than you had expected, albeit a surprise.

The non-physical, spiritual universe is not dead rocks and elements obeying natural laws. It is conscious, personal, warm, loving, and responding. There are no laws. There is only consciousness, which doesn't have laws.

As a result, when we look for evidence of what we believe about the non-physical universe, it may not be verifiable through the senses--it isn't physical. It will very likely be something very personal, feeling, and alive that must be experienced rather than observed.

I can imagine this dialogue with the skeptic who requires physical world consistency and cause/effect relationships for the non-physical world.

Skeptic: Ok, so prove to me that the non-physical world exists.

Me: Fine. Let's begin by talking about your sense that you are something more than a soft rock.

Skeptic: No, that won't do. I want hard evidence that can be replicated. Not feelings.

Me: Well, I have to be able to ask about personal feelings to talk about the non-physical universe, because that is the core of it. The physical universe you are talking about it has cause and effect at its core. I couldn't say to you, "Prove that gravity exists, but you can't use cause and effect." In the same way, you have to allow me to talk about the personal to present the non-physical Universe.

Skeptic: That sounds like New Age mumbo jumbo, but I'll play along.

Me: Thanks. The difference between the physical world's cause and effect and the non-physical world's personal consciousness is that you simply know about the non-physical world. You feel it. You communicate with it and it responds.

Skeptic: No, if it can't be verified, it doesn't exist. Psychic energy, God, all of that can't be proven. If you can't show observable evidence for it, it doesn't exist.

Me: I understand what you're saying, because that is true for the physical world. Do you have children?

Skeptic: Yes, I have a son and a daughter.

Me: Do you love your daughter?

Skeptic: Yes, more than I can say.

Me: How do you know?

Skeptic: There's no answer for that. I just know.

Me: That is the non-physical universe. You just know. The reason you just know without cause and effects is that it is personal and loving. Take all of the things you just know and put them together. They are the non-physical universe.

The consious, personal Universe has no laws of nature. We can't use the word, "evidence," with the same meaning we assign to it in the physical world. We have to use words such as conviction, feeling, sense, and belief.

That makes people grounded in the physical world very uncomfortable. The non-physical world isn't objective; it is subjective. It isn't observable; it is felt. It isn't consistent; it varies with the individual. It isn't out there; it is in here.

So what evidence do I have that the things I believe are true? I know. That won't convince skeptics, but "convincing" implies an objective truth everyone can agree on. Truth in the spiritual realm isn't objective; it is personal. Whose truth is right? My truth is right; and your truth is right; and his truth is right; and her truth is right.

So the issue isn't "What evidence is there that what you're saying is right." It is, "I am sharing with you my truth. It may help you as you learn your truth."

Physical World Experiences of the
Non-Physical Realm

Having said all of that, there are things I've learned about the non-physical world from using my psychic abilities and listening to others who have psychic abilities, such as personal psychic friends of mine and the gifted medium, John Edward. I do refer to those things I've felt and experienced myself, and things I've heard or seen from others, but they are not in an effort to provide physical, cause/effect evidence. They are truths for me. They may help you as you discover your own truth.

Sometimes, a number of people who have wisdom say the same thing. Or, an acknowledged teacher such as Jesus says something. The teaching seems to resonate among those who hear it. They are listening to their own inner self validating what they hear. There is a consensus about it, but that doesn't alter the fact that the truth, while shared by many, is still a personal truth.

The Personal Universe

And so, each of us is traveling a path in our personal universe. That may sound like we are all little islands in a vast, impersonal sea. It is not. Quite the opposite. As we travel on our journies, those in our lives are One with us. They are not out there. They are in here.

Every person has his or her own personal universe and personal journey, but in the process of going on that journey, you are all joined with me in my personal universe, just as I am joined with you in yours.

Consider that carefully. The stockboy at your grocery store with the markings of Downs syndrome is on a personal journey in his personal universe. You are part of his universe, as he is part of yours. Your smile is part of the warmth he feels on his journey. Your encouragement may be your opportunity to be the teacher for a moment as he draws closer to understanding.

And he may be the teacher for a moment when he smiles back and thanks you for being nice. What a lesson in your journey.

By having our own personal universes, we are closer to one another than we could ever be if we were separate beings in the physical world. There is no consensus in this personal universe. Consensus implies separateness that comes together in agreement. We are always in agreement. We are not separate.
